A Dental Implant is a metal device that replaces the root of a missing tooth. A synthetic tooth or tooth crown would be positioned on an extension of the dental implant, giving you a prosthetic that feels like a real tooth. Columbia View Dental is here to help you with implants and other dental-related conditions.
A dental implant is composed of a screw-like device that is inserted into the jawbone and an abutment that looks like an anchor for the crown. Dental implants come in two types: endosteal and subperiosteal. Consult with your dentist at Columbia View Dentistry and learn about the different treatment options suitable for you.
Endosteal Implants
Endosteal implants are the most common types of dental implants. Embedded in the jawbone, these implants can hold the artificial teeth in place.
During the initial surgery, the dental surgeon will cut open your gum to expose your jawbone. Then, they will drill holes in the bone and implant endosteal posts there. After the surgery, proper oral hygiene will be needed along with your prescribed medicines.
Your jawbone will grow around the implant and fuse with it through a process called osseointegration. Then, the abutment will be placed and, about two weeks following abutment placement, your dental crown will be placed.
Subperiosteal Implants
Subperiosteal implants are placed on the top of the jawbone deeply into the gum. They are usually used on those who don't have much bone density in their jawbone.
